MUNCIE, Ind. — A number of East Central Indiana high school girls basketball athletes were recognized as all-conference honorees for their efforts during the 2020-21 season.
For the Mid-Eastern Conference, Blue River Valley had three (Maci Chamberlin, Ally Madden, Abby Thornburgh), Wapahani two (Reese Baker, Camryn Wise), Cowan two (Kaylee Kear, Lauren Smith), Daleville one (Audrey Voss), Monroe Central one (Macy Shinn), Wes-Del one (Marci Bunch) and Union (Modoc) one (Honour Ellis).
For the North Central Conference, Muncie Central saw Jasi Scaife earn a first-team spot and Garynn Sims-Jones a second-team spot.

All-Delaware County high school girls basketball honorees announced
Numerous area athletes were recognized for their play during the 2020-21 season. On the first team, Cowan had three (Kaylee Kear, Emma Johnson, Lauren Smith), Wapahani three (Reese Baker, Jaylynn Willis, Camryn Wise), Yorktown two (Carley Culberson, Elizabeth Reece), Delta two (Addie Chester, Abigail Bamidele) and Daleville one (Audrey Voss). With regards to honorable mentions, there was Daleville’s Ellie Hochstetler, Wes-Del’s Marci Bunch and Yorktown’s Jenna Sylvester.
BSU gymnastics defeats Northern Illinois
Ball State improved to 11-0 this season Sunday with an 195.275-193.35 victory against Northern Illinois. Hannah Ruthberg won bars for the Cardinals with a 9.85.
BSU women’s basketball tops Buffalo
Ball State is now 11-8 overall and 9-6 against the Mid-American Conference after a 76-63 win Wednesday against Buffalo. The Cardinals were led by Oshlynn Brown’s 15-point, 13-rebound double-double, as well as Sydney Freeman’s 12 points, Blake Smith’s 12 points and Ivet Subirats’ 10 points. BSU is scheduled to have a rematch Saturday with Buffalo that tips off at 1 p.m. at Worthen Arena.
BSU track and field beats Butler and Northern Illinois at Ball State Tune-Up
In Ball State’s final scheduled competition before the indoor MAC championship meet later this month, the Cardinals’ team score of 60 bested Butler’s 23 and NIU’s 22. Ivy McKee won the 60-meter and 200-meter running events for BSU, as teammates Kennedy Batts and Elka Machan won the 60-meter hurdles and one-mile run, respectively. Ball State’s Kylee Mastin also won the 800-meter running event.
BSU women’s volleyball loses against Northern Illinois
Ball State suffered its third straight loss with a three-set, 22-25, 15-25, 20-25 defeat Thursday against NIU. This was also the third straight match in which the Cardinals failed to win a single set. In the loss, BSU was led by Lauren Gilliland’s five blocks, Kate Vinson’s 13 assists and Maggie Huber’s 11 digs.
MAC preseason coaches poll for softball predicts BSU will place third
Ball State’s 2021 season is scheduled to begin later this month, and when it’s over its conference’s coaches have selected the Cardinals to finish third among MAC teams in the preseason poll. BSU did receive a first-place vote, but Kent State still was picked to finish first and Miami (Ohio) second. The winner of the conference’s regular season title will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
BSU swimming and diving athletes earn MAC recognition
Ball State women’s swimming and diving’s Caitlin Locante and Alex Bader were recognized by the MAC on Wednesday for their efforts last week. Locante was named the conference’s women’s diver of the week, and Bader the conference’s women’s swimmer of the week. This is the second time this season Locante has earned this honor, and the first time in Bader’s career that Bader has earned this honor.
The Ball State program’s Twitter account also announced on Tuesday the addition of Max Kruglov, a prospect out of New York, to BSU’s signing class.
MAC recognizes BSU women’s tennis athlete
Emma Peeler’s win last week for Ball State at No. 1 singles earned her the MAC’s singles player of the week honor. She topped a competitor from Middle Tennessee in three sets.
MAC preseason coaches poll for baseball predicts BSU will tie for third
Less than a week before Ball State’s 2021 schedule was set to begin, the MAC announced the Cardinals were picked to finish in a tie for third in conference play with Miami (Ohio). BSU, which did not receive a first-place vote while the RedHawks did, were behind first-place selection Central Michigan and second-place selection Kent State.
Blackford announces new high school boys tennis and volleyball head coaches
Kevin Nolley will become the new boys tennis coach for the Bruins, and Kristi Shipley their new volleyball coach. Both of them have goals they intend to help their respective programs improve at Blackford. Their hirings were announced in the past week.
Yorktown high school girls soccer athlete selects collegiate destination
Yorktown announced Thursday that Anna Goller would be continuing herathletic career at Lakeland University. Goller, a senior this past season for the Tigers, will be joining a Division III program.
High school boys basketball
Burris 84, Hagerstown 70
Burris topped Hagerstown for an 84-70 victory.
Eastern Hancock 64, Blue River Valley 53
Blue River Valley suffered a 64-53 defeat against Eastern Hancock.
Pendleton Heights 64, New Castle 58
New Castle lost 64-58 in overtime against Pendleton Heights.
High school boys swimming and diving
Blackford, Delta, Jay County, Muncie Central and Burris compete at Jay County sectional prelims
Top preliminary times were set by multiple area athletes and teams. For Delta, that was Sam Arnold (200-yard freestyle), Eli Arnold (200-yard individual medley, 500-yard freestyle), Brady Samuels (50-yard freestyle, 100-yard butterfly) and the Eagle’s 200-yard freestyle relay and 400-yard freestyle relay teams. For Burris, that was Justin Xia (100-yard breaststroke). And there were numerous other area athletes and teams who finished in the top eight in their respective events.
Yorktown competes at Hamilton Southeastern sectional prelims
Yorktown saw Gannon Crosser finish with the best preliminary time in the 100-yard backstroke. And other top-eight finishes for the Tigers came by the 200-yard medley relay team, 200-yard freestyle relay team, 400-yard freestyle relay team, Dray Caldwell (200-yard freestyle, 500-yard freestyle), John Hicks (200-yard individual medley, 100-yard butterfly), Seth McKinley (100-yard breaststroke) and Crosser (50-yard freestyle).
